What is CodeSignal?
CodeSignal is a technical interview solution. According to the vendor, companies of all sizes already use CodeSignal’s Pre-Screen and Interview products to tap into underrepresented pools of candidates, increase speed-to-hire, and increase candidate pipeline yield. Studies have shown that companies who use pre-hire screenings see turnover rates reduce by 39%.
CodeSignal uses technology to predict a candidate’s interview performance. CodeSignal’s predictive assessments go beyond testing only for data structures and algorithms, instead they dive deep into subject-specific assessments. Assessments on CodeSignal’s platform support 38+ programming languages, provides an advanced real-world coding environment, coding scores, and utilize a proprietary AI-powered plagiarism check.
Overview of CodeSignal Features
CodeSignal offers tests in 38+ programming languages in a real life coding environment. Per the vendor, their platform is a “flight simulator for developers” that allows candidates to utilize familiar tools to edit, run and debug their code.
CodeSignal offers keystroke playback and an automated plagiarism checker. The ability to play back the candidate’s keystrokes means that their work can be evaluated by multiple members of the hiring team without the hassle of everyone attending the assessment live. Their AI plagiarism checker searches for suspicious results, such as similarities in candidate responses.
CodeSignal’s assessments can assist companies looking to diversify their teams. Companies can replace a resume screen, and the unconscious bias it may bring, with a coding assessment. Using assessment scores allow them companies to evaluate candidates purely on skill rather than any other factor.
Coding Tests
CodeSignal divides different coding tests up into unit test frameworks that assess a person’s technical skills. Examples of unit test frameworks include:
NUnit for .NET Framework
xUnit or NUnit for .NET Core
JUnit for Java
Mocha/Chai for JavaScript
PHPUnit for PHP
unittest for Python
RSpec for Ruby
UI tests using Galen
UI functionality tests using Puppeteer
Assessments can be set to run in a specific language, or can be language agnostic so that the candidate can complete the test in their preferred language.
Testing job-specific skills allow for companies to pre-screen based on candidate skills and helps to improve the interview to hire ratio, since only qualified candidates will be offered interviews.
Coding Interviews
Companies can use CodeSignal for more than just their screening assessments, as the platform also allows for coding interviews and whiteboard sessions. CodeSignal’s coding interview options are suitable for in-person or virtual interviews. Companies can choose interview tasks from a pre-existing library, or can easily import custom tasks from GitHub.
Using CodeSignal’s interview tool, companies can see how candidates interact with the tools they will use every day on the job and make more informed hiring decisions. Team members can interact with the candidate to evaluate their approach to solving problems.

Reviews
(1-25 of 63)Getting a job with CodeSignal!
- CodeSignal is very effective at giving companies a third party way to efficiently screen candidates before moving them into their next rounds of interviewing
- CodeSignal is effective at scoring and judging a candidate's technical competence with a reasonable margin of error
- CodeSignal has a great support team that responds very quickly and handles issues adeptly
- There have been some loopholes identified in terms of approaching the assessments, which can potentially compromise the integrity of the assessment.
- CodeSignal's biggest problem for me is that you can't take an assessment again. You have to wait 14 days. This is tough because if you do a test for one company and you don't like your score, your only options are to send the bad score or wait to take another test which can be problematic due to the strict deadlines some companies impose.
- CodeSignal could use a better way to prepare for the assessments within the website. Maybe like a 'module' on how to approach the test etc. This is because CodeSignal, while providing similar questions like the Leetcode website or the like, will occasionally ask questions that are far different from what is typical in tech interviewing websites.
Good but will benefit from continued improvement
- Variety of questions separated reasonably into different categories.
- Organized and useful courses.
- Clean and easy-to-use online code editor.
- CodeSignal homepage can be difficult to use; the "recommended next task" isn't always useful or optimal.
- A hidden dropdown menu underneath the brand logo can be hard to find; I had difficulty finding the "interview practice" button. Would be preferred to keep it on the top bar where "my profile", "test center" etc are.
- I don't believe that the CodeSignal currency is useful; it seems to be an unnecessary distraction.
CodeSignal is good for assessing junior engineers
- Testing the skills and knowledge of junior engineers
- Lets reviewers see what the candidates wrote while the exercise was happening and provides an indication of the candidate's thought process
- In my opinion, UI is really bad
In my experience, CodeSignal can be very useful for more junior roles, and in particular when you receive a lot of applications and you need to have more data points on candidates before deciding whether or not to move forward with more interviews
We use CodeSignal for both screening applications at the beginning of the hiring process, as well as for live coding interviews in the final stages of the process. It is very convenient to have a bank of questions to draw from. We also use it to create custom tests and exercises.
The platform gives a great candidate experience in that the editor is easy to use. It is easy to define and run test cases. It is easy to share the editor and IDE between the candidate and the interviewer. We have received a lot of positive feedback from candidates on the interview experience.
- Great candidate experience
- Intuitive interface
- Powerful options for asynchronous / take-home screening exercises
- User friendly live coding / collaborative editing experience
- Seeing or creating reports on tests and candidate submissions
It provides an effective, low overhead screening solution for inbound applications.
It provides a bank of interview questions.
It allows a company to define custom interview questions and share them with candidates.
It allows easily reusable links to be shared for coding exercises.

Coding Made Easy...
- The UI of the platform is amazing and very user-friendly.
- The clarity on how an interview test is assessed is great and very easy to understand.
- Automated coding tests that companies can use.
- Amazing practice tests on the platform.
- The range of scores given to a individual can be better explained.
- The practice tests given on the platform are too easy and can be improved to match the level of the actual test.

Satisfaction guaranteed
- Easy to use, set up, and configure.
- User-friendly UI.
- Adding notes to facilitate the exchange of candidates' information between applicants' users.
- The applicant design is not up to date, needs some additional customizations.
- Can be a bit hectic when the numbers of applicants increase, to manage price.
- Mailchimp support has been a bit lacking.
This is really helpful if you want to scale quickly.
- Developer assessment.
- Skill evaluation.
- Coding score.
- Web Interface.
CodeSignal : Some good, Some bad.
- It has IDE, which helps you put debugging statements and run code which helps to find bugs or verify results when practicing coding.
- It also has dedicated Java Spring-related questions that mimic what is being worked on in the real-world (Creating APIs etc.).
- It definitely lets import/support more libraries than other coding platforms out there.
- It needs to expand its use case to another actual working environment beyond Java and spring (not sure if it supports everything today).
- The ones which have 3 or 4 questions to be completed within 1 hour is really bad for people who code in Java and provide a HUGE advantage to people who code in python.
- Modify the question based on the language chosen; only then the time limit will make sense.

Incredible recruitment sourcing
- The simulation of the test sessions with the practice sessions integrates the user well with the platform with use cases.
- The test questions involved are up to par with industry standards and makes one deliver an expression of his knowledge in a language.
- CodeSignal provides a platform to improve your knowledge in any programming language by assigning badges to accomplishments keeping users motivated.
- W
It is suited for both amateur programmers and advanced programmers as it introduces the former to a wider range of possibilities with code and the later a platform to refresh and optimize your skill for new interviews or projects.
My thoughts on CodeSignal

An Opportunity to Grow Yourself
- Organizing questions based on the implementation and data structures used.
- Customer service and user interface are both excellent.
- A diverse set of questions that is regularly updated.
- Minimizes the number of candidates by screening through.
- The platform should provide candidates with detailed feedback, allowing them to identify areas for improvement if necessary.
- Furthermore, despite the fact that the assessment is complete, the platform prioritizes speed. In order to finish the assignment on time, people may be forced to forgo quality or desired output.
- They should improve the question selection procedure, as some of the questions are too long to finish in the allocated time.
- Hiring managers are not required to take part in programming reviews.
- User interface and rich client services.
- By filtering through, the number of candidates is reduced.
- Organizing questions depending on how they were implemented and the data structures that were employed.
- Both the customer service and the user interface are outstanding.
- A broad assortment of questions that is updated on a regular basis.
CodeSignal at its best
- Meeting preparation.
- Interview opportunities.
- Gain coding skills.
- Slim time limit for tough question.
